This quirky children's story features a cast of unusual characters:
Albert George O'Leary, a half-blind and cantankerous powerful owl;
Prickerly Jimm Esquire, a pompous echidna sporting a toupee made from a
cricket glove; J. Arthur Scout, a good-hearted truck;
and Bruce, a female hairynosed wombat.
This oddly assorted group commences an odyssey to the Savannah Country,
where they hope to retire in peace. Along the way they encounter a host
of other animals and birds, both friendly and intimidating, and learn
about their bush lifestyles. When they finally reach the Savannah Country,
they discover that it has been invaded by cane toads and hatch a plan to
drive the toads out, returning the country to its rightful inhabitants.
The story is both amusing and educational and is illustrated with Pamela's
line drawings. Although these are clearly early works, Pamela's familiar
style is displayed. The drawings of lyrebirds are particularly fine.
